Vietnam’s First Interactive Comic Book: Rescue Seven-Colored Rabbit in the Colorless Kingdom

Considered one of the most beloved characters in Vietnam, Thỏ Bảy Màu has never stopped creating and bringing laughter to audiences. Starting out as just a social media meme in 2014, Thỏ Bảy Màu later expanded into comic creation, successfully crowdfunded an animated film project, and has now released its first interactive comic book. It can be said that Huỳnh Thái Ngọc, the creator of Thỏ Bảy Màu, not only wants audiences to watch the character, but also hopes to bring it closer to people in everyday life.

The Colorful Universe of Thỏ Bảy Màu

Thỏ Bảy Màu first appeared on social media around 2014. Initially, it was just a simple character drawn by Huỳnh Thái Ngọc for entertainment, but it quickly gained popularity thanks to the rabbit’s straightforward and outspoken personality, portrayed through one-page comic strips that were easy to share online.

Short comic strips were not enough for Thỏ to fully express all of its ideas, so Thỏ Bảy Màu began experimenting with animation. At first, due to limited funding, Huỳnh Thái Ngọc had to handle everything himself. Over time, Thỏ Bảy Màu animations became a familiar name among young audiences during the Lunar New Year holidays.

Not stopping there, in 2022, Thỏ Bảy Màu and Sun Wolf Animation Studio attempted community crowdfunding for a feature-length animated film, and the results exceeded expectations. It became the first and only animated film project in Vietnam to raise more than 1.5 billion VND from the community. It can be said that Thỏ Bảy Màu is one of the rare Vietnamese characters capable of achieving such remarkable milestones.

A Distinctive Yet Relatable Creative Style

The stories in Thỏ Bảy Màu are heavily inspired by everyday life in all its colorful forms, but they are retold through a humorous, accessible, and sometimes satirical perspective, always accompanied by a few light twists. The world within the series may seem illogical at first glance, yet it somehow feels completely reasonable.

It is not difficult for audiences to connect the stories in the animations to real life or even to themselves. Many viewers jokingly say that watching Thỏ Bảy Màu cartoons feels like watching a compilation of world news events from the past year.

A Unique “Character Universe”

Over many years of development, the world of Thỏ Bảy Màu has expanded with supporting characters such as Ông Năm, Chị Xô, and Anh Quăn. Each character has a distinctive appearance and personality that audiences can instantly recognize whenever they are mentioned.

Every character has their own desires and circumstances, yet they always end up working together to solve the troubles caused by Thỏ Bảy Màu.

In 2024, Thỏ Bảy Màu and Én were selected by Meta (Facebook) as two Vietnamese characters to join its global sticker library, allowing users around the world to use them. Soon after, Thỏ Bảy Màu stickers quickly entered the list of most frequently used stickers. It can be said that although the character was originally intended only for development within Vietnam, the unique personality of Thỏ Bảy Màu helped it spread far beyond local audiences.

From Web Comics to Official Publications

After many years of growth on the internet, Thỏ Bảy Màu officially made its way onto printed pages with titles such as Thỏ Bảy Màu và những người nghĩ nó là bạn and Thỏ Bảy Màu: Timeline Của Tui Có Gì. According to Fahasa, Thỏ Bảy Màu books have consistently ranked among readers’ favorite titles. Up to now, more than 200,000 copies have been sold through Fahasa alone.

But the creator did not stop there. Huỳnh Thái Ngọc wanted Thỏ Bảy Màu to become even closer to audiences. Feeling unsatisfied with ordinary books, he created a more unique format that allows readers not only to experience the story, but also to creatively shape it in their own way. The release of the interactive comic Giải Cứu Thỏ Bảy Màu Trong Xứ Sở Không Màu is considered a new experimental step in the author’s storytelling approach.

Perhaps that is why it took Huỳnh Thái Ngọc five whole years to publish another interactive comic book like this one.

Unlike traditional comic books, this publication is designed as an interactive journey. Readers not only follow the story, but also join Thỏ Bảy Màu on an adventure through the pages of the book.

No matter what kind of personality you have, this comic is made to suit you. If you are lazy, you can simply use stickers; if you are hardworking, you can draw; or you can even cut, paste, and create your own ideas. The author describes the concept as: “A mixed hotpot of interactive comics.”

This new interactive comic is considered the next step in expanding the creative universe of Huỳnh Thái Ngọc, while also delivering a unique and different reading experience for fans.

The Future of Thỏ Bảy Màu

According to creator Huỳnh Thái Ngọc, he hopes that in the future, Thỏ Bảy Màu will belong to everyone. Ngọc wants people to be able to “own” Thỏ in their own unique way. Although the creator’s full vision has not yet been revealed, audiences can look forward to what comes next.
